The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square Overview

First Impressions

Walking into The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square, you immediately understand why this five-star property commands such respect in Chongqing. The lobby feels expansive yet intimate — honestly, it’s one of those spaces where you want to linger with a coffee just to people-watch. What struck me most was how the design manages to feel both distinctly Chinese and internationally sophisticated without trying too hard. The staff here actually seem genuinely pleased to see you, which isn’t always a given at luxury hotels.

The Heart of Chongqing

You know what’s brilliant about this location? You’re literally steps from Liberation Square, which means you’re in the absolute center of everything that matters in this sprawling city. I mean, when couples rate a place this highly for romantic getaways, there’s usually a good reason — and here it’s the combination of being walkable to the best restaurants and shopping, yet feeling removed from the chaos once you’re inside. The Jialing River views from upper floors are something else, especially at sunset when the whole city starts to glow. You can actually walk to the Hongya Cave area in about ten minutes, which saves you from dealing with Chongqing’s famously complex traffic.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in felt genuinely spacious by Chinese hotel standards — and I’ve stayed in quite a few. What I appreciated most was the attention to lighting; there are enough options that you can actually create the mood you want, whether you’re working late or trying to wind down. The bathroom deserves special mention — that rainfall shower is exactly what you need after navigating Chongqing’s hilly streets all day. The bed lives up to Westin’s reputation, though honestly, the real luxury here is the soundproofing that lets you forget you’re in one of China’s busiest districts.

Dining and Amenities

The hotel’s main restaurant serves both international and Sichuan cuisine, and while I was skeptical about hotel Sichuan food, they actually know what they’re doing. The breakfast spread is extensive — you’ll find everything from congee to fresh pastries, plus they make a decent Western-style coffee. The fitness center and spa facilities feel properly luxurious without being over-the-top, and there’s something to be said for having a proper pool in a city where good swimming options are limited. Parking is available, though honestly, in this location you’re better off using the excellent metro connections.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back here — and I’ve met several repeat visitors — is how the hotel manages to feel like a calm refuge while keeping you connected to everything Chongqing has to offer. The service strikes that perfect balance between attentive and unobtrusive, and the concierge team actually knows the city well enough to give you recommendations beyond the obvious tourist spots. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about watching the city lights from your window while knowing some of China’s best hotpot is just a short walk away.

The concierge service in Chongqing arranges night hot pot cruises, aerial tram charters, and private tastings through Hongya Cave food labs.

The staff definitely made the experience exceptional. The facility has amazing views. The rooms are spacious, beds are super comfortable. And the location is prime.

Phyllis Gong, guest service manager, was genuinely friendly, resourceful and helpful. Everyone from front office manager to all the staff made the experience one to remember.

Referred my friends and colleagues, definitely visit Chongqing and Westin again. Location is pretty prime. Near shopping district and financial district but not directly on the path. Lots of local shops and restaurants nearby. The views are exceptional. The facility has many hidden gems. Thanks for the amazing experience.

  • Fong from Malaysia – 18 November 2024 (8/10)

Great location. Wonderful rooms which were luxuriously large, clean and comfy. Staff were competent, and supported by very capable management, from arranging rooms for our group of 4 friends, to extending late checkout (when it became available). Jack Zhou went above and beyond by helping us out of a predicament we found ourselves in at the last minute – he was tactful, resourceful, and knowledgeable. Thanks and kudos to the Westin team! Will certainly recommend this hotel to anyone heading to Chongqing!

  • Pedram from United States – 29 September 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: Most staff didn't speak English but try to help as much as they could

  • Boyan from Bulgaria – 21 September 2024 (9/10)

The Westin was Phenomenal through and through – it would be tough to find a better hotel from which to explore Chongqing. The location was perfect and our higher floor, corner room was incredible both in terms of format and view.

The rooftop beach was a fun quirk too.
